“Getting Things Done”

Dear Friends,

Even though this term of Council has been very trying, we have been able to get many things done; and in keeping with my promise to keep you updated on my work and other happenings at City Hall, I’m pleased to provide you with this newsletter update.

So far this term, I have channeled most of my energy into local issues, including:

Community Office opened to the public six days a week. As promised, to serve you better, my Constituency Office has been opened Monday to Saturday. Furthermore, I have held “Extended Constituency Hours” to assist you on a one-to-one basis between 5:00 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. at different locations throughout Ward 17, making our office one of the busiest at City Hall.

The TTC exclusive right-of-way on St. Clair West. I was opposed to the plan put forward earlier this year to install a 24-hour exclusive TTC right-of-way on St. Clair Avenue West, and favored a much less costly rush-hour only proposal. As I explain inside, I do not believe that narrowing sidewalks, eliminating trees, removing streetscape enhancements and pushing polluting motor vehicles into local neighbourhoods, is an overall progressive change. The plan was approved despite unprecedented local opposition, including more than 11,000 signatures from local residents and hundreds of letters, calls and e-mails opposing the plan.

Community safety. Safety has been, and will continue to be one of my top priorities. Presently, I have been working with Community Police Partnerships (PCP’s) of 12 and 13 Divisions, and with the Ward 17 Crime Task Force, which I Chair, to close down a number of well-known problem commercial establishments and crack houses in our area.

Creating New Parks in Ward 17. I am working diligently with City and Hydro One staff on long term leases at different locations to create parks, parkettes, bicycle and walking paths, and plant trees at locations across Ward 17. I’ll keep you updated on our progress.

New housing developments have been approved. Through the City’s planning process, and in consultation with local residents, I ensured that amenities like streetscape improvements, adequate lighting, ample parking, as well as parkland and public space were part of the approved developments.

Helping form five new “Residents Associations”. I’ve been building strong ties with community leaders, groups, organizations and all residents to ensure that, through Residents’ Associations our voices are heard and local City issues are resolved faster and more efficiently.

An Environmental Assessment study to build a “GO Transit Station” at
St. Clair W. and Caledonia Rd has been approved. If realized, the new transportation hub will bring more people, life and vitality to the whole area.

On broader City issues, I have championed several issues at City Council including proactive inspections of the City’s massive Toronto Community Housing affordable housing stock, to bring conditions up to par with the private sector property standards. I was also pleased to support many new By-laws, including, the “Tree By-law” that will harmonize tree protection across the new City and go a long way to protect and enhance our urban forest and the “Pesticide By-law” which placed new restrictions on pesticides that have been connected to higher rates of cancer and other negative health effects.

Also locally, cleaning up our streets, implementing the innovative “Green Bin” program, and dealing with thousands of individual residents’ issues and concerns has consumed, intrigued, and inspired me. With so much more to do, I look forward to continue serving you, and hope that I can count on your support in rejuvenating and rebuilding our Community and City!

Best wishes to you and your family for the Holiday Season, and have a safe, happy, healthy, and prosperous New Year!

Cesar Palacio
